The miracle of chalk

London, UK

The garden’s design was inspired by quintessential elements of French Gardens. Chalk is the soil of northern France and in particular the Champagne Region, home of Laurent Perrier. By using plants only suitable for this soil, the garden shows how with careful coaxing, a spectacular richness can be brought forth from a seemingly weak and unyielding foundation. Box headed Lime trees, sumptuous Roses, Irises, Peonies, gentle wild meadows and vines all combine to create a contemporary evocation of all that is stylish, liberal and romantic in France. Particularly appealing is the clunch drystone wall that blends so beautifully with the planting.
