Chelsea and Westminster Hospital

Indoor Garden

London

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital has a fair number of long term patients who can gradually lose contact with the outside world. As Artist in Residence I was invited to create an indoor park where patients could reconnect with nature, or undertake physical therapy or simply just have a break from the ward. The park, named Green Haven, is made using sunny colours and warm textures of printed birch plywood and melamine. The huge planters have integrated seats and are filled with sub tropical plants and trees. This is the first of many gardens we anticipate in the hospital. They form part of academic research into health benefits to patients. The results are resoundingly positive.
